When a ring main feeder is supplied by more than one sub-stations or generating stations, such distribution system is known as inter-connected distribution system. This system ensures continuity of supply in case of fault and failure in the transmission line.
Also, those areas fed from one sub-stations or generating stations can be fed from other more sub-stations or generating stations during the peak load periods to meet the power requirement for the increased load. The breaker or switches are strategically placed at various points in a loop which can isolate faulty section of the system minimizing the number of customer affected by the outage.
Advantages of Inter-Connected Distribution System
- Increases Reliability
- Continuity of power supply even one source fails to supply
- Load Balancing Across Sources Possible
- Improve Voltage Regulation
