[2025] All Measure of Prevention of Overheating of a Transformer

The overheating in a transformer can cause serious damage to their parts, failure, fire or explosion that leads to power outage so, overheating must be prevented for the continue operation of the electrical power system network. All preventive measure of overheating of a transformer has been listed below.
  1. Proper Load Management
  2. Proper Cooling and Ventilation
  3. Temperature Monitoring
  4. Regular Maintenance
  5. Proper Sizing
  6. Earthed Neutral
Measure of Prevention of Overheating of a Transformer

1) Proper Load Management

Proper load management means monitoring the load on the transformer and ensuring that it is operating with its rated  capacity. Load monitoring equipment such as ammeter and power meters is used to measure the load and adjust it as necessary.

Load sharing between the all three phase of the transformer must be balanced for proper operation of the transformer to reduce the heat production in order to prevent overheating. If the load on the transformer is consistently too high, must have to increase the capacity of the transformer.

2) Proper Cooling and ventilation

Proper cooling and ventilation means proper flow of air and circulation of insulating oil around the winding, core and through the oil tube of the transformer dissipating the heat and keeping the temperature within the standard safe range either by natural air or installing fans.

Regularly have to clean the radiators or coolers and ensures ventilation openings are not blocked. Transformers have to be placed in the well ventilated areas and must use exhaust fans and ducts to remove hot air. Also use heat shielding equipments to protect the transformer from the direct sunlight.

3) Temperature Monitoring

Monitoring the temperature of the transformer help identify when the transformer is operating above the safe standard range of the temperature by using temperature monitoring equipment like mog (Magnetic oil guage). Cooling system must be connected with the mog or temperature monitoring equipment so that it can start  the cooling system of the transformer when temperature rises above standard safe value.

Temperature monitoring provides the early warnings for the proactive interventions that are generating heat or may damage the transformer.

4) Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance means inspection of the transformer main tank or cooling tubes for wear and tear, inspection of insulation, silica-gel breather, cooling systems, bushings, and proper loading. It helps to identify the problems before they can damage the major parts of the transformer and cause serious problem like failure of transformer and power outage.

5) Proper Sizing

Proper sizing means using transformer of required KVA to serve the consumers. By using transformer of correct size reduces overloading on the transformer as well as prevent overheating.

6) Earthed Neutral

Neutral on a transformer must be earthed to ensure zero potential by transferring any raised potential to the ground which can damage to other parts of transformer that lead to overheating.

Conclusion

Hope, you have understand about all the measure of prevention of overheating of a transformer. Make sure to your opinion and suggestion about this post in the comment section below.
