[2024] Purpose of Starter in Induction Motor Explained

The main purpose of starter in an induction motor is to limit the high starting current which can cause huge damage to the motor winding and insulation of the induction motor.

At starting, the speed of induction motor is zero resulting back e.m.f. induced in the armature winding is zero. As armature resistance is very low and if it is connected to the supply directly then, huge amount of current will pass through armature winding that may damage the winding and insulation. So, there need to use a device called starter to limit this high starting current to flow in armature winding to avoid chance of damage to the winding and insulation of induction motor.

The starter is a device which is basically used to limit the starting current by supplying reduced voltage to the motor winding at the time of starting and full voltage is applied to the winding as induction motor picks up speed.

Conclusion

Hope, you have clearly understand why we use starter in induction motor. Make sure to leave your opinion and suggestion about this post in the comment section below.
