[2024] All About Voltage Regulation Explained in Detail

Voltage regulation is defined as the process of controlling or adjusting  supply voltage of an electrical system i.e maintain the desired or constant level of voltage in a part of power system or for a machine. The voltage regulation is given by the following equation.

Voltage Regulation = ((No Load Voltage - Full Load Voltage) / Full Load Voltage) * 100%

in short,

V R = ((VNL - VFL) / VFL) * 100%

where,

  • V R is Voltage Regulation
  • VNL is No Load Voltage
  • VFL is Full Load Voltage

Working of Voltage Regulation

The voltage regulation can be achieved by various technique. A simple overview of working of a voltage regulator has been listed below.

  1. Sensing - A voltage regulator continuously monitor the output voltage and compares it with reference voltage.
  2. Error Amplification - Any deviation between the the supplied voltage and reference voltage is considered as an error to generate an error signal.
  3. Control - Error signal is used to control a variable element such as transistor or switch.
  4. Adjustment - The variable element is used to adjust the output by varying its resistance or switching to state bringing the output voltage back to the desired value.

Types of voltage regulation

Voltage regulation is classified into four types which are listed below.

  1. Line Regulation
  2. Load Regulation
  3. Series Voltage Regulation
  4. Shunt Voltage Regulation
