[2023] All About the Arc Chute Explained in Detail

An arc chute is a set of parallely arranged metal plates which is mutually insulated from each-other, used to extinguish the electric arc safely when the circuit is opening and interrupts the high value of Electric current to confine and prevent the arc from damaging others parts. It is also known as arc runner, arc splitter and arc divider. These metal plates have equal air gap between them and are made up of Ferromagnetic Materials.

Arc Chute

Arc Chute is placed near the contacts of the Circuit Breaker. It is very Important part of the circuit Breakers and also known as arc divider or arc splitter as it divides and cools the electric arc. Arc Chute is present inside the Circuit Breakers, Contractors, isolators and other High Current Interrupting Devices.

Arc Chute Working

When the fault occurs such as short circuit and overload, the circuit breaker will immediately interrupt the electric current by moving the contacts apart. During the separation of contact terminal an arc is induced which produces a lots of heat at very high temperature.

As the metal plates in the arc chute is made of ferromagnetic material, the arc is attracted and moves towards the plates of arc chute itself. Then the plates of the arc chute scatters and divide the arc into the small segments. This will increases the length of the arc and cools it down. Hence the arc gets extinguished without causing damage.

Arc Chutes are Used in which Circuit Breaker

Low Pressure Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) Contains Arc Chutes that Divides and Cools the Electric Arc, Vacuum Circuit Breaker e.t.c
