The function of transformer oil in a power transformer is to insulate the transformer winding as insulator and cool the heat produced in winding and core of the transformer as a coolant. Transformer oil is stable at high temperatures and has excellent electrical insulating properties.
Due to high dielectric strength, chemical stability and thermal conductivity of transformer oil, it is able to resist high voltages and prevent rise in the temperature of the transformer core or transformer winding as oils circulate between the core and radiators to dispatch the heat to surrounding atmosphere. It prevents the transformer winding from burning.
As whole transformer is immersed in transformer oil also protects transformer winding from the moisture. Transformer oil surrounds around the transformer core and winding of transformer and prevent the winding and insulation of the transformer from oxidizing, corroding and becoming less effective.
Transformer oil also provide lubrication for tap changer as a lubricant in the oil immersed transformer provided with the tap changer.
Conclusion
