An EV Charging Station Consists of Various Components Such As Electric Vehicle Charger, Facility Meter, Energy Controller, Connection to power Grid, Operating system and So on which provides the facilities to charge an Electric Vehicle Battery safely.
It is also known as charging point or EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment).
Types of EV Charging Station
Battery can be charged only with dc power but most of the available power is alternating. Hence, there are two main types of EV charging station according to types of power is supplied which are listed below.
- AC Charging station
- DC Charging station
AC Charging Station
Most of the electricity is delivered from the electrical power grid which is alternating. For this reason, most electric vehicle have built-in AC to DC converter known as on-board charger. AC power from the grid is given to this on-board which convert ac to dc that is used to charge the battery of the EV.
DC Charging Station
DC charging station facilitates fast and higher power charging which requires much larger ac to dc converter, by building the converter into the charging station instead of inside the vehicle to minimize the size and weight.
Connector Used in EV Charging Station
Charging Station uses the connector that conform to a variety of international standards. DC Charging station are commonly equipped with multiple connectors to be able to charge a wide variety of electrical vehicles.
Commonly used connectors are Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 for ac charging station and Type 4 for dc charging station. Many standard plug types are defined in IEC 62196-2 (for AC supplied power) and IEC 62196-3 (for DC supplied power):
- Type 1: single-phase AC vehicle coupler
- Type 2: single- and three-phase AC vehicle coupler
- Type 3: single- and three-phase AC vehicle coupler equipped with safety shutters
- Type 4: DC fast charge coupler
